    •  My basic take on this.... (6+ / 0-)

Stupid kid says something very stupid ~ way too common with people in their late teens/early 20s. And way too easy in the social media era.....

Fortunately, in the US, such matters are usually confined to football rivalries and actions that are accompanied by a beer, 'Hey, lookit this', and a Darwin award nomination.

If this post was indeed made by an Israeli soldier (and I'd lean toward that being the case, as opposed to a hacked account), it looks like the IDF followed through with more than a Darwin award.

Repeating stuff (especially without double checking for basic follow-up, which took one little easy click to the front page of CounterCurrent News to find) like this uncritically and without the whole story only makes the situation worse.....here at DKos and in the real world. It also makes it easier for people on the 'other' side (whichever side that is for a poster....) to dismiss future real issues from someone being an idiot on social media.

This jerk posted this on a Palestinian's Instagram account. That goes beyond just being an idiot.

      •  As a veteran, I'll respectfuly disagree (13+ / 0-)

with the sort of "boys will be boys" excusing away of this. It is also perfectly in sync with the prevailing attitudes in Israel right now. You can find that attitude in the streets, in the comment sections of the articles in Israel, and it's all aflame in social media and even among those I know there. What's sweeping Israel is akin to a rabies epidemic; it is like most the population has gone mad. And, while the idiots do it in selfies, the more sophisticated is doing it hushed tones, but doing it nonetheless.

It is a weird phenomenon I think being fed by the Internet.

        •  Not excusing it.... (4+ / 0-)

Thirty days in jail is at the least a reasonable punishment. Maybe more would be better ~ don't know on that :-( Lots of variables that the news articles don't have ~ IDF rules on social media usage, other times the kid messed up, and so on.

Unfortunately, this sort of stuff happens. Abu Ghraib photos, anyone? And, yes, the Internet has made it worse ~ much worse.

But it has also shed light on the worst cases. I'm sure things like this (or the historic era equivalent) happened during the Civil War, both World Wars, the American Revolution, and so on, with no publicity for the perpetrators to be stopped and/or disciplined for their idiocy.

But posting the picture from an article from last week without checking the same news source for an update before posting here also contributes to the overall problem.

        •  What is becoming blatant in Israel, (8+ / 0-)

          It's not the internet.

A long observed phenomenon is that in order for a society to justify, injustice, it must dehumanize the people subject to the injustice.

What started as quiet, behind closed doors sentiment back in 1948, is now loud, blatant and open.

In order to do brutal and inhuman things, one must create justifications for first, brutal and inhuman laws, then brutal and inhuman forces to enforce those laws, and by this process, over time, society as a whole, becomes brutal and inhuman.

          It's an old, old story.

and by 'rusty' I mean non-existent. Google translate did the trick (sort of).

      What an asshole.
