  •  Put another way: (21+ / 0-)
Peace will come when the Jews will love their children more than they hate Arabs.
    Nothing bigoted there!

Golda Meir was prime minister in 1969.

In 1958 the Secretary General of the Arab League, not some crank.. their elected leader, stated publicly

This will be a war of extermination and a momentous massacre which will be spoken of like the Mongolian massacres and the crusades
In 1961, Hafiz Asad, the Defense Minister of Syria publicly said
We shall never call for nor accept peace. We shall only accept war.  We have resolved to drench this land with your blood, to oust you aggressors, and throw you into the sea
      April 20 1963 State-run Radio Cairo broadcasted
The Arab people will pronounce the death sentence against criminal Israel, namely disappearance . . . Israel is the cancer, the malignant wound, in the body of Arabism, for which there is no cure but eradication . . . There is no need to emphasise that the liquidation of Israel and the restoration of the plundered Palestine Arab land are at the head of our national objectives.
On June 13, 1967 the formal representative of Saudi
Arabia stated at a UN Secuirity Council meeting
No Arab dares to talk with Israel unless he is a puppet —
and the puppets will be dealt with appropriately. I will be sorry for them as human beings because nobody should kill anybody else in this world. Thirteen Arabs were shot like birds on the rumour that they were going to talk with Israel, during the last two decades. So, then, let us not mislead ourselves here in the United Nations by saying that any talks will solve the problems.
1 month before this, the Ahmed Shukairy, the public leader of the PLO was quoted as saying
There will be no Jewish survivors in the Holy War of liberating Palestine
and Gold Meir became Prime Minister two years later.  This is what she faced.  And you expect her to be optimistic about Peace?

Take whatever position you want on the modern day state of Israel, but Meir's quote was simply stated:  As long as hatred is a constantly reinforced top priority of every country around her, there will be no peace.  This isn't something to be negotiated about borders, trade rights, revenue sharing or self-governance... she was facing omnidirectional existential race hatred.

I don't think that is the fact today, at least not outside of a self-perpetuating minority, on both sides.  But in Golda Meir's Israel her quote was accurate.

Im sure you have plenty of reasoned arguments to support your position against Israel's current actions and positions of state policy.  But taking a 50-year old quote out of context to try and call people bigots is not one of them.

      •  I see what you did there (13+ / 0-)

You turned "Arabs" into Arab leaders and Arab countries. Make all the difference in the world.

(By the way, she said that in 1957, prior to all the quotes you cite.)

While it's a fact that Israel was founded on ethnic cleansing and colonialism, which continue today, only an Arab bigot would say "Jews" hate Arabs because Israel doesn't represent "Jews" and the people you cite don't represent "Arabs."

        •  What does "the Arab League" purport to represent? (6+ / 0-)

People that live on or near the Eastern shoreline of the Mediterranean?

"Arab People" also don't start regional wars.  "Arab countries" do and did, repeatedly.  This is was the point of Meir's quote.  Peace, at its simplest, is a surcease of warfare.  She didn't speak of harmonious coexistence of mutual respect.  She just meant peace and the fact that it wouldn't happen with every surrounding nation publicly and vociferously promising its people war, and war, fuled by hate, in turn fueled by race, with a single-minded non-negotiable objective.

And yes she said it in 1957, while holding the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs.  I do not think she was speaking in the abstract.

The quote in context is infinitely easier to defend then any current day action and requires no need for bigotry labeling.

Governments. How representative they are of Arabs as an ethnic and cultural whole is open to debate. As is the degree to which they are "representative" of their own populations.

In any case, Meir didn't specify either Governments or organizations such as the League. She spoke of "Arabs" as an ethnic whole in the same way that "Jews" refers to Jewish people as an ethnic whole. She did so while asserting that hatred of Israel trumped Arab's love for their own children.

I suspect you wouldn't be trimming in this way if the same sort of comment had been made regarding Jews.

      •  I hear you, but the problem is that the quote (9+ / 0-)

is being used to defend/describe the present situation. Israel has come a long way since Meir was PM. When it comes to Gaza, it is Goliath.

      •  What? (5+ / 0-)

        A) Just because her opposition were bigots, doesn't justify  bigotry

        B) the quote was brought up because the author of the diary used the quote in a modern context, not because the commenter just pulled it out of nowhere.
