The New York Times -- and, particularly, its publisher and senior editors -- made the decision to publish the Pentagon Papers, knowing (as their lawyers told them) that they could be jailed as a result. Back then, the publisher and senior editors fired their lawyers (who refused to countenance the publication) and hired new ones and published anyway.  And then they went to court -- all the way to the Supreme Court -- and won.  (This was also the paper that also took on Bull Connor and the southern racists who attempted to shut them down with ruinous libel suits -- and took them to the Supreme Court and won.)  And stood up to President Johnson when he demanded that they bring David Halberstam back from Vietnam and kept Sydney Schanberg on the payroll when he reported important and horrifying stories from Cambodia.

It's hard to reconcile that paper with the paper that has been dragged grudgingly into calling torture "torture."  And it is so very sad.

The NYT is following its London counterpart into nothingness. Sad, but true.

I mean, it's hard not to notice that Maureen Dowd is given hundreds of column inches while saying nothing, doing nothing, bar perhaps achieving a Beltway circle jerk once in a Blue Moon, William Safire - a conservative I could like, even if I disagreed with him - was replaced by plastic emptiness posing as serious thought, and the Op-Ed page gets more fair-and-balancedy every time I read it; not in the Fox way, in the well, any old absurd assertions deserve a place in our pages way.

I like Kristoff, and praise the Krugman, who I would welcome as my new Overlord :-).

But Friedman really tips the scales towards worthless meaningless.

I ride the wild horse .
