    Thank God they were Democrats.

    •  My parents were apolitical (7+ / 0-)

Politics happened on another planet in our household.   I thought my parents were Democrats until I became an adult and asked them how they voted.  I was surprised to find out they voted 100% Republican.

Of us six children from that apolitical household, three are solid Democrats, two are solid conservative Republicans, and one is outwardly apolitical but leans left

Per the diary, I was in high school when Nixon resigned.  I remember the news reaction but not the event.  Oddly, I do have a vivid memory of LBJ on announcing on TV in 1968 that he would not seek re-election.

I somehow recognized this was big news though I was young, but there was no discussion or reaction to any of this in our household.

In hindsight, it is interesting to compare LBJ's statement with Nixon's statement.  Both acknowledged that the nation and the presidency were stressed. However, LBJ opted out voluntarily but Nixon resigned when he realized he would be forced out through impeachment if he stayed.

      •  "Apolitical" describes mine at the time, too... (3+ / 0-)

My first political memory was something about Ford. I don't even know exactly what it was about. lol.

I think it was me pondering who I would vote for if I'd been old enough to vote.

I had no idea what a Republican or Democrat was, I just liked the name "Ford" because, well, he makes cars!
