  •  2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Tom Emmer..... (8+ / 0-)

....is the favorite to take Bachmann's seat.  There are other candidates as well--Anoka County Board Member Rhonda Sivarajah got the Star Tribune endorsement for the race...and I believe former House member Phil Krinkie is still on the primary ballot as well.

Her retirement was undoubtedly brought on by the recent inside baseball scandal she dodged and her nearly getting defeated in a district that Mitt Romney won by 15 points two years ago.  Only Bachmann was capable of making this district competitive, and big of an assclown as Tom Emmer is, it's hard to imagine he'll ever face any difficulty holding this seat if nominated.

    •  Inside baseball? Do tell about this. (1+ / 0-)

    •  Ah ha! (0+ / 0-)

As soon as I heard of her "retirement", I immediately linked it to the ethics complaints. Her announcement came hard on the heels of another announcement - yet another extension of that particular ethics investigation. As I recall, an investigation of an ethics complaint is allowed two extensions and she's now on the second and last one.

The whole inquiry has stretched over some 19 months, far longer than normal. In other words, she's as guilty as sin and her Republican colleagues on the committee are shielding her with deliberate postponements because, if they did complete the inquiry and had to make a recommendation, it would inevitably be censorship by the House accompanied by a lifetime ban on any and all elected office.

Someone on that committee has warned her that they can't postpone the inquiry indefinitely and that the only way for her to avoid the consequences of a guilty verdict is to "retire" - the moment she leaves the House, the inquiry becomes null and void.

As to warrant a lifetime ban. Hell, Edwin Edwards spent years in prison and is eligible to run again (and is). Charlie Rangel is as corrupt as the day is long, and is still in the House. It takes an IMMENSE amount to expel and ban someone from Congress.

        •  Thank you for putting me straight on that (0+ / 0-)

          I appreciate it. (◕‿◕)

So what could they do to her?
