  •  America is indistinguishable (65+ / 0-)

from a third world country.  God knows, our inequality is approaching those standards, and with inequality, you get a range of stuff.

Ferguson was getting out of control in part because of poor police tactics.   90 plus percent of the folks demonstrating are very peaceful.  Police tactics (after Sunday night) seemed to escalate violence rather than tamp it down.

It does not have to be violent.

    Let's hope this helps.

    •  My European students are always (8+ / 0-)

shocked during their first year. They say that over and over again—"My god, America is like a third-world country!"

They say it about infrastructure, about health care, about governance and bureaucracy, about culture and education. The America that they experience on our university campuses in major cities bears no resemblance to the "superpower" that they've read about in the marketing materials.

Older graduate students from the former soviet bloc say things to each other like, "Remember doing thus under communism? This is what it used to be like in the '80s for us!"

And the American perception of the rest of the world is similarly skewed. People here openly mock China. But I have had lots of upper-class undergrads from Beijing and Shanghai comment on how backward America seems, and how they thought they'd be coming to try to build a career and a life, starting in our university system, but now they're going to Europe, or back to China.

And of course whenever I tell anecdotal stories like this here, a contingent of DKos posters comes out and either claims that I'm exaggerating or begins to talk amongst themselves about how I'm making things up and am just another internet troll who pretends to be this, that, or the other. They'll go back through my comment history and try to find "proof" that I'm a fraud through inconsistencies (that aren't actually inconsistent—that are, in fact, what my real life looks like).

Because somehow people simply cannot believe, for any reason, no matter what, that the U.S. is in danger of falling into utter social disrepair, if it hasn't done already, relative to the rest of the industrialized world, including countries like China.

I know that when I went to Eastern Europe during my own graduate study (this was earlier in the 2000s), family and friends were worried about my visiting post-soviet-bloc countries. There were "don't drink the water" jokes and things of that sort.

Then I got there and found cities that were in very good repair, with humming commerce and shiny stores. Living conditions were, in fact, nicer that what I'm accustomed to in major U.S. cities. Connectivity to the 'net and to mobile was better. All of my credit cards worked with no problems. And the people were generally happier and more optimistic. It was like going on vacation to Vancouver.

I ended up marrying an Eastern European person that I met during this time period, and she emigrated to the U.S. and now is a legal resident—and hates living here. It's an ongoing issue for her, just how "backward" the U.S. is in so many ways relative to what she was used to at home.

The U.S. is not what it was. And it's slipping farther away with every passing day.
