  •  IA-SEN: "The United Nations has imposed this (10+ / 0-)

upon us, and ..." she says with the authority of ignorance and the guile of

Such word drop-bombs INFEST right wing jargon.  There is no "imposed" anything involved, but it slips past the mind and goes direct to the reptile brain.  Multiply this by propaganda's repetitition on the air, and soon the lies create an infestation of fear, uncertainty, and doubt.

Soon we forget the truth about misinformation: it increases ignorance.

    •  Why are republicans allergic to anything (9+ / 0-)

that is actually a good idea?  I mean given their politics, how are any of them still alive.  I would imagine their personal lives must be like "Wow, you mean NOT playing Russian roulette is a good idea?  Let me go get my gun!"  "Ooh, remind me to ride my motorcycle at 90 miles an hour across black ice without a helmet!"

Seriously.  How are these people still alive if whenever they hear a good idea they immediately RUN to the opposite thing?

      •  Probably impossible to (3+ / 0-)

generalize about why rightwingers think the way they do. (To be fair, the same could be said of us.) But I will say that among rightwingers of my acquaintance, fear of the unknown (which definitely includes the foreign) looms large.

A fun experiment would be to offer groups of rightwingers and liberals free meals at, say, a Belarusian restaurant and see who accepts. I'll bet anything the liberals would accept and be curious what Belarusians eat. The rightwingers would figure it's probably gross and head for Golden Corral (the 99%) or wherever it is the 1% eat.

        •  The 1% don't eat at Golden Corral (4+ / 0-)

They at home, in the palace. They eat meals prepared by their chef and served by their butler. Having said that ...

RWers are averse of change and fearful of the unkniwn. They resist change because, to them, change is painful. It's a deep deep denial of the fact that change is all there is. Everything changes. Always. Nothing lasts forever. Of course, plenty of us lefties are averse to change too. But I think that more lefties than RWers are cognizant of eternal change as the basis of reality. We like change.

Joni Earnst is not talking to farmers. She's talking to people whose parents "fled to the suburbs" after American schools and housing were desegregated in the 1960's and '70s.

The code words are all there. "Property rights" are synonymous with "the right to own a house in an all-white neighborhood". "City centers" are where "continental" people live.

Rants about "U.N. Agenda 21" stirs up lingering cultural resentment towards the federal courts and the "Big Gub'mint" that forced integration upon them a generation ago.

to check out a Belarusian place if someone invited me there & if one was nearby (FWIW there are very few GC's here in NJ; the nearest one to me is a 2+ hour drive).

I am worried by polls I have seen on the Iowa Senate race, so I just donated to Bruce Braley through ActBlue. I notice that Braley and Mark Begich are getting totals under 1 million.
