commander in this situation, having been brought in by higher-ups (primarily Nixon, I guess) to trouble-shoot a situation that had gone badly wrong.

So far, he has handled it beautifully, it seems.

However, there are aspects that are long-term and probably beyond his scope, such as hiring a more diverse force for the city and county, and training the force to respond appropriately to escalating situations.

Somebody in the local and state bureacracies, and/or elected officials are going to have to address those things beyond the current crisis.

He is the Mo. HiPo commander of this district. When he says it's his home, he isn't just saying something he thinks people want to hear. From what I've read, he doesn't live in Ferguson, but not far away. He didn't have to pack a suitcase.

he was born in Ferguson and only moved to where he lives now to follow the job.  So it's very possible that he actually knows a good many of the people he's policing, and they know him.  That, in my opinion, was the best part of this move.  And the results -- so far -- appear to bear that out.

Now it's up to Nixon to deliver on the rest of his promises.

I meant he was "brought in" to the command structure for the situation, not that he was geographically moved.
