description of depression.   For me, I have from time to time wondered how folks get to 45, 55, or (in Robin William's case) 63 and THEN commit suicide.  But I realize that it is just a battle that sometimes people lose for whatever reason.

I have suffered from major depression for most of my life, and find that as long as I can focus that if I gut through miserable times that it does at least for a while get better.

Your comment that otherwise well-meaning statements can exacerbate things when in a depressive state.  For me, and mind you I will NEVER say this, is "I know how you feel. . ."  You don't!  I will never know "how" you feel and you will never know how I feel.  And that is ok.   Instead, you might "maybe relate" and you might know that depression is a peculiar, profound pain that is different from physical pain, but just as debilitating in a different way.

I do believe that the stigma of mental issues is slowly getting better, and I recognize that
