at the Pentagon responsible for these illegal sales.

It's quite possible we have another Iran/Contra-type scandal going on here. A subversion of authority at the least.

    Damn, what am I thinking?!?

We always look forward... not back.

But as Commander in Chief, Obama can set the terms he wishes and I think Netanyahu just tripped over his dick.

Watch Congress get outraged and come back against Obama and trip over their own dicks/whatever.

And when he does his Commander in Chief thingy, accuse him of being Hitler or Imperial or whatever. I sure like seeing Obama rub Congressional Republican noses in the dog shit.

Actually, it will be interesting to see how Clinton et al react to this, I would not be surprised if her Atlantic remarks poured a little gasoline on that fire. Kiss and make-up? LOL.

State seems to be backstopping Obama, as they should.

I think reasonable legal minds could argue a conspiracy here between certain, high-ranking members of the Pentagon and a foreign entity -- in this case the Israeli government -- to buy/sell arms, circumventing standard protocol, and civilian authority.

        This seems serious.

        •  That's possible (0+ / 0-)

          Depends on circumstances, I suppose.

My premise is that if the rules for releasing weapons normally did not require presidential approval on a per transaction basis, and whatever rules are in effect were followed, then it wouldn't have been illegal. But that if Obama as Commander in Chief decides to change the rules, he has that authority.

But even given a situation where, on one level, people are following the rules to the letter, it doesn't mean they might be violating spirit of the rules or other rules, so that's a reasonable question.

One problem as I understand it is that the US actually stocks a lot of weapons under it's control inside Israel and so, in a practical sense, there is not much of a safety net against abuse and the relationship between actors on both sides is ripe for abuse and conflicts of interest.

Perhaps one thing Obama is intending to do at this point is put a check on that and slow things down.

I think it's a very wise move on his part; the good twin won this round.
