  •  Look this in no way justifies what the police did (4+ / 0-)

but I don't think most of us committed strong arm robberies by intimidating what appears to be an elderly shop clerk.

We can fight for causes while keeping our eyes open and without needing to turn people into larger than life heroic figures.

This doesn't excuse anything the police did. It doesn't matter if Mike Brown was a robbery suspect or an innocent kid or a good person or a bad person.

    •  We have to stop the demonizing (10+ / 0-)

Of black males.... Of all ages.

And it does have to do with a good or bad kid. Because the overall smear will focus on this act... And pull up other stupid things he may have done in his young life.

And strange, but true, I've had young adults confess to me some pretty bad stuff they've done. Whether it was seriously beating someone (I don't think vigilante behaviour should be condoned) or stealing things that would make it a felony (value).

They have to know they are a part of the community. They do not feel that way now, and that is our fault. The most serious damage falls on black and brown youth, but all teens are facing serious psychological issues right now because of this and other attacks on their humanity.

First. Jobs. They need jobs. They need them badly. They need them now. We have already lost an entire generation. Lets not lose another one.

that stealing things from a store and basically assaulting an elderly clerk when confronted is a bad thing.

The point is that the bad things that we do are BAD THINGS. I think you're coming dangerously close to saying that all black men do things like that and I don't think you want to go there.

The problem is that we try to hold people up as heroes or perfect individuals when it's irrelevant. It's actually destructive - particularly for the black community.

When you try to act like victims are "angelic" you're implying that if he WASN'T angelic then maybe he just might deserve to be shot. Given how many black males see the justice system for things that white males get let off for this is extremely dangerous.

Whether he stole stuff is really irrelevant to him getting killed. It's obviously self-serving for the police to leak this.

That doesn't mean we have to say what he did was right or that "boys will be boys." Mike Brown was wrong to steal those thing and it's TOTALLY IRRELEVANT to the wider discussion.

Thanks for making assumptions. Nowhere did I mean to indicate that all black males did bad things.

However the general assumption by the majority in this country do believe that all black male  do bad things.

And the overall feeling is that all blacks deserve their poverty.

Keep reading into things that are not there, and keep on shutting down dialogue and discussion.  That's a great way to discuss the real issues on hand that will continue after Michael Brown is no longer in the media light and the next black man is a victim of this type of murder.

          You have a great evening...

cigars as he was about to leave the store. Maybe he was going to celebrate with friends, maybe he was just feeling mannish. I'll bet most of us have snatched something from a store at least once in their life. And apparently they never left the store cause his friend says he put them back on the counter.

In any case, the police chief says the killer didn't know about the theft. So, he simply called the guys over (profanely), they didn't obey fast enough to suit him, so he escalated the situation. Just like the whole force did a couple nights later. A plain case of murder. And I think the idea I've heard from several folks, to drug test any cop involved with a death, is a smart one.
