  •  Ferguson shows why voting is important (6+ / 0-)

When it was learned that Ferguson is over 65% black yet its local government is about 90% white, many where asking, "what gives?"

Three possibilities: 1) Lack of black (Dem.) candidates; 2) Lack of GOTV (including voter education); or 3) Both.

If this community had a more diverse government that closely resembled its demographics, I'm sure it would have also had a more diverse police force instead of an almost all white (probably with more than a few racists) force policing a mainly black community.  I would also bet that a more diverse police force would have been more in touch and less confrontational towards its community.

Democratic Party why people weren't voting, which seems obvious given the demographics of the town and the composition of the elected and appointed officials.  She gave the same old, tired excuses/reasons.This is a prime example of how elections can matter, especially local ones.  The Democrats need assistance to put into place what you suggest is needed: groom and recruit candidates and GOTV.

76% of Ferguson's registered voters turned out, and Obama got 85% of the vote, winning every reporting unit. I don't have a solid voting-eligible population count, but it appears that the registration rate was pretty high, too.

I can see why a local Democratic Party head might not be too perturbed. But clearly the black citizens of Ferguson aren't getting the local political representation they need.
