    The nobility had little reason to head off to the Holy Land to seek new fiefs, provided you were the senior member of the family and had inherited the title and lands.  Many junior members of those families were going to receive very little in lands and titles and were all trained to level needed as a noble.  All of the senior members realized that their brothers and relatives would be lying in wait for a chance to grab the titles.  What better way to get those junior members far, far away than to send them to the Holy Land from whence they might never return.  The French nobility didn't call it the "Outremere" for nothing.
