  •  I empathize with your status as oldest (5+ / 0-)

Since the death of my mother 3 years ago, I am now the oldest.  Since the death of my wife a year ago, I also have no reference point other than myself.

I always compared being the oldest to being the "point" for the family.  I find risks and dangers and neutralize them before they damage the family.  I take out problems before they are problems.

    •  Being second-oldest . . . (6+ / 0-)

. . . has been my position for a long time, ever since my father was killed in the Vietnam War when I was seven (hence my avatar, the Gold Star Family Pin).

For some reason it did not hit this fifty-four year old (well, I was aware of it but paid it little heed) that my family is essentially ending.

My mother is seventy-four, and suffered an burst aneurysm in her brain a few years ago that mere luck saved her life.

Only a couple weeks ago I hit a deer with my Smart car at sixty miles per hour. (What Mercedes-Benz says about its Smart's safety is true: there was no damage to the car, or my wife or me.)

It is incumbent on us all to cherish our lives, our families, our neighbours, and our friends, and even those we do not know, for life is both short and unfair. What makes it fairer is empathy for those around us.

I have not seen my mother in a couple years: perhaps it is time I go to Chicago and visit.

My wife and I are going on a trip to Little Rock for a convention; perhaps I should add a couple hundred extra miles to that trip to visit.
