to the whole LGBTXYZ vernacular.  #WTF.  Do we really need to boil down our sexuality to the chromosome level?  Has it gotten to that?  "Well, I'm a LGBTXYZ cis, how about you... ?"  "I can top that... "  [rolls eyes]

    •  Yeah, the number of letters is getting a bit silly (0+ / 0-)

I can think of at least two more identities one could express that still aren't included in the usual alphabet soup.  I wish the movement to express support for all sexual identities wasn't so obsessed with finding all the tags or labels and including them all in a big mesh of letters.

It makes people look a bit silly, even if the intent is in the right place.

With all respect and understanding, I would suggest that you are both perhaps missing the point of the alphabet soup. I know it's all a bit unwieldy. And in time I hope that it will grow less and less neccessary. But for so long society has been structured in such a way that if you were heterosexual, and at home in your assigned gender then you got to stride comfortably through the world without ever having to think about anything. But if you were gay, or bi, or trans, you were at best invisible to the point of not existing, and at worst you were a freak, an abberation to be feared, ridiculed, and persecuted. Times have changed, and part of that change is making people understand that things are not as simple, and binary as we were once told they are.

If the price of helping people to understand that people who don't fit into the narrow parameters of old exist and are due the same consideration as everybody else, is having to understand and learn how to use a few new words, I would say that is a very small price indeed.

        •  Labels don't make a difference. (0+ / 0-)

It's the conversation around the labels that matters.  It's the recognition of bigotry in our culture that matters, in whatever form it takes.

As I said, I can think of at least two more sexual identities that aren't included in the alphabet soup labelling.  Not being aware of what they are doesn't matter as much as the underlying arguments supporting any disadvantaged minority group should work to support all of them.

Including the two labels that aren't yet recognized isn't really that important.  Learning to recognize and discourage bigotry, no matter the words used, is the fight.
