in the street and not on the sidewalk.  Not something that we all shouldn't question.  Just don't jaywalk...

that police departments should have, and be expected and required to have, a robust policy for distinguishing BETWEEN shooting unarmed jaywalkers and shooting armed attackers -- and documenting for the public just how that is accomplished.

There must be departmental investigation and appropriate degrees of sanction, up to and including referral to the criminal justice system for murder prosecution.

        investigated.

If I recall, the original story was that Brown was shot in the back, but the autopsy said otherwise.

Early facts aren't always so factual.

need to be investigated? Michael Brown was unarmed and was shot multiple times and died in the street.

          •  We know that he had no gun. (0+ / 0-)

He was shot by a police officer in the course of his duty.
What we need to know is if that shooting was a criminal act. So far, not only does it look bad, but it seems like lots of information that should be available -- isn't.

I don't know what the standard is in a case like this, and I don't know what's in all the stuff that isn't being released.

It's understandable that people thought he was being shot in the back.

          •  That isn't consistent with the autopsy report. (0+ / 0-)

You don't get shot in the front if you're running away.  However, the story that he was standing with his arms raised appears to be completely consistent with the autopsy report.

the gunshots so it's understandable if they thought he'd been shot in the back. I've seen the results of the autopsy. I know he hasn't but it's understandable how the rumor got started.

The most credible witness of all of them said he "jerked LIKE he was shot in the back" (emphasis added).  When asked again, she said "he jerked AS IF he was shot in the back." (emphasis added) She NEVER said "he was shot in the back." Please stop saying that because you sound like Bill O'Reilly.

          •  Ummm...the witness may have said that, but (0+ / 0-)

"shot in the back" became the story as it whirled around the internet.  Such is the norm for stories that are unfolding fast, touch hot buttons, and are subject to some asshole somewhere trying to keep the facts under his hat.

It's a great example of how the wrong story can seem like the real deal.

There's one going around on right-wing sites now that the cop suffered a fractured eye-socket.  Sounds like something that could be true.  Maybe it is true. But...the source is a right-wing blogger who claims to have gotten it from two *anonymous* credible sources in St. Louis.

As I've said, the only things I'm sure of are that a young man is dead, a cop killed him, and a neighborhood has  been under siege.
