    was on PBS Newshour last week addressing this issue.

    He stated they want to hire more black police officers, but not many enter and graduate from the police academy.

    There are ways to increase black enrollment, but I think the larger issue is: do people in general want to be police officers? is this a desirable career?

      Maybe it's because of past discrimination, lack of promotion etc. But I guess it's easier to say blacks aren't interested or too stupid rather than change the systemic practices at the root if the problem.

        that wasn't the attitude of the former mayor.

        I suggest we could get better caliber/better qualified police candidates of all races IF their pay and benefits were significantly raised as an incentive.

        But that's not going to happen.
