  •  I always thought that 1812 (5+ / 0-)

was an attempt to grab land from Canada.

… the NSA takes significant care to prevent any abuses and that there is a substantial oversight system in place,” Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California), said August 23.

    •  I think the hope (4+ / 0-)

was for all of Canada. I'm not sure how much actual territory the government or army thought it really could take, or if they intended to keep it, or just settle a border dispute in our favor and keep the British off our territory. The Northwest was American on paper, but Britain treated it like its own territory. Upstate New York and Maine were disputed. I think Americans were more interested in protecting our shipping and the western frontier, where Britain was encouraging Indian attacks. There wasn't one clear cause, but several causes insufficient individually, which was why it took a long time to talk a majority into supporting war. Another way it was like Bush's invasion of Iraq.

      •  And then there was the underlying question (3+ / 0-)

of whose side the US would be on in the Napoleonic wars. By default we were on the French side, if indirectly, which flew in the face of many who'd been advocating for joining the British effort for at least a couple of decades.

It was a miracle that the war was post-poned until 1812, had it happened earlier, or under different circumstances, the consequences would likely have been worse.
