Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us. ~ Garcia

Other than electing the first non-Caucasian president, which would only have a negative impact on liberal politics?

ODS results in Obama's amazing ability to humiliate his biggest critics, on the right and the left.

      •  I thought that "other than" was considered… (0+ / 0-)

…rather significant, especially by some of the President's more ardent supporters.

        I guess you're right — it wasn't historic.

          Another trolling fail.

Someone actually admitted on DK, "Yes. If it pisses you and the other Greenwald-Tweet-pearl-clutchers off, it's smart." Wow. Just....wow.

but it takes tremendous hindsight and wishful thinking to think we elected Cornel West president and not a mainstream Democrat.

I mean, the Monday-morning Quarterback argument "Democrats should govern more to the left" is fine as far as it goes --  even the claim that he has a duty to because of what the country "needs."  That just boils down to Cornel West's opinion, but it's particularly insidious to suggest that Obama is especially obligated to govern a certain way or have certain opinions because of his race.  I'm pretty sure both Obama and West are black, and between the two of them, only one of them has been elected President.  In other words, the politics of racial authenticity are bad enough, but if we put it to a vote, West won't win.

If there's a bait and switch it's in West's rhetoric.  He frames his argument in terms of process, taking the form of Obama should have done 3-4 things differently, but he doesn't go through the analysis of how that would work or achieve results.  Instead, he's looking only at outcomes, but these deal with factors exogenous to Obama.  Again, who is better equipped to read the politics?  The one who was elected President twice or the one being interviewed in Salon by a reporter as critical of him as Sean Hannity interviewing Ted Cruz?

        Difficult, difficult, lemon difficult.
