by trying to raise Obama's negatives even higher to such an extent that people will vote GOP in 2014 and 2016 no matter who they throw out there.  That's how they 'won' in 2000.  Gore had everything going for him in 2000 except that he worked for a President that a lot of people were sick of after 8 years.  People were sick of the drama and they marketed Bush as a pragmatic conservative who wouldn't rock the boat.
A lot of people overlooked Bush's obvious flaws and shortcomings simply because they were sick of Clinton-era drama.

Well, the GOP has spent Obama's second term doing nothing but creating drama...from stymying every effort to help the middle class to shutting down the government to exploiting the false start of the health insurance exchange to the foreign policy issues.  If you look at any of those issues factually, Obama has prevailed or is prevailing.  However, they've succeeded in making Obama's negatives go higher simply because of their ability to spread their message and the media's inability to understand how to report facts.

So, a shutdown is in the cards.  It might mean losing a shot at the Senate in 2014, but it could raise the 'sick of all the drama' factor for 2016 that could help their candidates.

    •  Yes, just like how gay marriage was a wedge issue (0+ / 0-)

That brought repubs to the voting booths during W's years, they are hoping to get GOP voters to the polls by getting them fired up on imigration, and Rubio being a Latino, is the perfect usher since it is a bit more difficult to paint him as a bigit

    •  Gore had the voters on the day (0+ / 0-)

Republicans had to steal Florida five different ways plus get the gift of the butterfly ballot in order to get the result close enough for the Supreme Court to steal.

He could have done much better if he had not tied himself to old-line triangulating Democratic campaign strategists.
