  •  Isn't the entire state of Texas (5+ / 0-)

    more dangerous than the Bronx?

It seems to me that Texas has higher levels of all kinds of toxic stuff, from pollutants to mortality rates, lack of health insurance and all kinds of stuff that threatens its population than the Bronx. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if life expectancy itself were lower in Texas than the Bronx.

    •  I work with someone who recently (4+ / 0-)

moved from Bensonhurst (I know, Brooklyn) and people say to her, "New York City? How can you live there? It's so dangerous!" and she says, "There's three times more poverty and violent crime here; how can you live here?"

I'm living in America, and in America you're on your own. America's not a country. It's just a business.

      •  Where did they move to? (0+ / 0-)

Also, Bensonhurst has never been particularly scary. At least not for white people.

I've lived in Brooklyn for almost 67 years, since long before the hipsters were even born, let alone showed up here, and the conceptions some people have of it are hilarious. I used to work with a nice woman, also a native of the city, whose husband, from upstate, would not come to visit us because he wouldn't get on the subway. They lived in Manhattan and he walked to work.

"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."........ "The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little." (yeah, same guy.)
