I believe President Obama is waiting for the NATO nations to make a plan. ISIS is closer to them and has made unveiled threats to the Brits particularly but to others too. NATO really needs to take the lead.

I hope the Mideast nations make a plan. IS is right in the middle of them, and a creation of their direct action and indirect in/action. IS, especially after crowning itself the caliphate, threatens every one of them, especially Islamist countries. Including the Saud family, which likely had a strong hand in creating IS as part of its terrorist wars against Iran.

NATO is responsible for defending its nations, all in Europe or N America, from an attack on one of their member countries. Its mission was already stretched in the former Yugoslavia, which wasn't NATO and didn't attack a NATO member - but could arguably have presented an imminent risk from an aggressive Serbia.

But even in that case, including some Islamist countries in the alliance that stopped Serbian brutality, especially in Muslim Kosovo, would have been an important exercise in military cooperation to protect civilians in the region from terrorism, including state terrorism. A model for European and American inclusion in a force removing Assad from Syria or Kadafy from Libya without leaving the country to jihadists.

In this case the local countries have the primary responsibility to do something to protect themselves. Indeed they've all bought many $BILLIONS of weapons for decades on precisely that premise. Now is the time for them to pay the real costs and take the real risks.

Maybe in the future they'll do more to prevent this from happening among their neighbors, if they have to pay the costs when it does happen.

      •  Maybe "the mideast nations" can convince (0+ / 0-)

Turkey (a NATO member) to seal its border. Or maybe not. Maybe the Saudi Royals will kiss and make up with Assad. Maybe the sheiks of Qatar will finally see the light... and so on.

      •  Exactly right. (0+ / 0-)

And to some extent, that is already happening.
Iran is in, Syrian and Iraqi Kurds are in, Iraqi Shiite militias/army are in, I must assume that they are calling in the airstrikes we are providing.
But the Arabs from Saudi to Kuwait as well as Turkey, Egypt and Jordan need to be at the center of whatever plan is devised. (A reconstituted Ottoman empire?)
It would be astounding if we ended up allied with Iran and Assad, if Turkey formed an alliance with the Kurds...

If I ran this circus, things would be DIFFERENT!

      NATO? Take the lead? Hmmm.

Voting is the means by which the public is distracted from the realities of power and its exercise.
