    It wasn't just holsteins.  Ours was a diversified farm with: rowcrops, hay, beef cattle, pigs, a poultry operation, etc.  And as you say, it became unfeasible to make a living on 400 acres just selling commodities.

    I'm in my 5th year as a vendor at the  Palafox Marketin Pensacola, Florida.  We specialize in wild foraged fruits, herbs, and mushrooms.  And now we do two dozen grilling and smoking woods, and we've gotten really good at cultivating several mushrooms on logs and wood chips.    

    After watching half our neighbors go bankrupt in the 1980's,  I think we have a decent shot at making a living - by selling directly to the consumer, and building a large, loyal clientele.
