  •  "Prosperity gospel" is a shockingly popular creed (10+ / 0-)

though it appears to have almost nothing to do with the text of the New Testament.   Or any other major religion, almost all of which emphasize compassion, charity, and so forth.

    •  prosperity gospel is the oldest creed (7+ / 0-)

Man has never worshiped any god for that god's own sake, but always for his own sake instead - successful hunts, bountiful harvests, many children, victory in war, and a happy afterlife.

Domestic politics is the continuation of civil war by other means.

yet the idea that kindness is a virtue, did eventually catch on in a lot of circles.

It's most often about protecting the prosperity of the few rich, in the case of apocolyptic religions often by promising adherents the virgins and the cash after death, or some other kind of ultimate triumph, if they refrain from rocking the boat in the present life.

Mass marketing of immediate prosperity is a much smaller phenomenon, I'm reasonably sure. Even faith-healing was a lot more common when I was hearing the religious con artists of the mid century --probably because people can delude themselves about feeling better a lot more easily than they can about being richer.

I remember when Reverend Ike came out pushing his "money LOVES me" theme in the 70's I think --it was pretty big news for being so brazen.

It contained a "prayer mat" that he would "bless for you" if returned, wrapped around a large denomination bill. Prayer mat and stamped return envelope were enclosed.

          That really pissed me off.

          Idea!

I wrapped the prayer mat around a small piece of paper on which I wrote "Shame on you" and mailed the envelope after removing any identifying information.

I was sure that it would be opened. Small action, but satisfying.
