  •  I have long thought (7+ / 0-)

that meeting a hostile alien species would unite humanity and make us realize that isn't a certain country vs. the world but the world vs the rest of the hostile universe.

    •  I feel the opposite (2+ / 0-)

I don't think the political units on this planet would be able to come to an agreement quickly enough.

    •  I think that's pollyanna'esque, with all due (4+ / 0-)

respect. Nothing can or will ever "unite humanity." By definitions, being human, it just is not possible. The best one can hope for is that he/she resides in a place where authority is held by humans who are not depraved and crazy. I think there are fewer such places. I think there are plenty in our country who, if given cover, would happily summarily execute a significant percentage of their fellow countryman.

Does anyone seriously think fundamentalist Christians would bemoan the beheading of every LGBT person in the U.S., if they had legal cover or others could do nothing about it? They'd do it in a heartbeat; they are only morally and doctrinally-separated from those in the ranks of IS by their geography.

    •  It's a universal dream (0+ / 0-)

More than one Dr. Who episode has been based on that idea. I think we all dream of it, it being the uniting of the world's people. In our hearts we all know that they are just lines drawn on a map.

Some humans ain't human some people ain't kind. They lie through their teeth with their head up their behind. You open up their hearts and here's what you'll find - Some humans ain't human some people ain't kind. John Prine

    •  I would hope so too, but ... (2+ / 0-)

... given that the very real threat of mass human extinction in the next few centuries due to the obvious (and increasingly obvious) threat of global warming hasn't done a damn thing to unite humanity and make us wake up, and get our heads out of our rear ends of denial ...

I doubt aliens could do it either.
