but I think the truth is that no one really does.  I agree that we created this mess.  Not just with the war in Iraq -- there has been a long steady progression which includes our role in Afghanistan in the 80s, our support for the Saudis for the last 60-70 years (which IS the original source of all this fanaticism), the Iranian Shah, Israel etc etc etc etc.  So now we have this.  The only thing I do know is that we cannot keep on relying on old war-mongering strategies which only serve to create increasingly monstrous situations.

Besides, why do you think that they are beheading these guys so publicly?  Obviously they are trying their best to provoke a conflict.  From their perspective, the more "martyrs" the better.

I agree with pretty much everything in your statement, except the reason for their actions.
I believe it is rather to rally their base (as sick as this sounds) by showing how "powerful" those terrorists are.

I don't have the best answer either, but unless those elements are eradicated, they will not stop or tune down.

impossible to rationalize insanity.  But 2 things come to mind.  Most of their base does not have access to the internet, so very few of them will see these videos, though they will hear about them. The other thing is that they have beheaded and crucified way way more of "their own" then they have beheaded westerners.  Which shows just how insane they really are -- if they keep that up, they will (or already have) created their own blowback.

But as long as the Arab oil flows and is profitable, their will be a seemingly unending source of this "mindset" because the arab princelings have made a deal.  You let us keep the money and you can keep your insane religion.

It has often occurred to me that the Saudis & other gulf states could do a LOT to end these kinds of conflicts by pumping massive amounts of humanitarian aid into the Palestinian territories:  Schools, hospitals, housing, business development.  But they really don't.  It serves their purposes to fan the flames of religious fanaticism and hatred and to keep these wars going, as long as they are kept away from their kingdom.  And they have been remarkably effective, as their financial portfolios prove.

check wikiquote.  Aristotle never said that.  It was Will Durante explaining Aristotle.

I love the quote, by the way.
