  •  I'm of the opinion that Munich (6+ / 0-)

was not the great historical turning point that it is made out to be. Hitler already had his plans for conquest mapped out. If the UK and France had gone to war over Czechoslovakia rather than Poland they would still have faced a long and protracted war. It would have just started a year earlier.

productively than UK or France. So while there would still be a war, it could have gone differently.

is more entertaining than seriously productive. It's impossible to predict the practical military outcome of something that didn't happen. The usual implication made in the invocation of Munich is that Hitler would have been cowed into giving up his grandiose schemes of world conquest. I believe that is pretty clearly an ill-founded claim.

of "alternative" history around Munich was internal to Germany. There was a resistance group in the German military that had largely the Heer behind them since the german generals (who then were not yet purged) were no fools and knew that Germany would near certainly ruinously lose such a war. The group was organized around Franz Halder, the Chief of Staff of the Heer. They begged the British on informal channels to stand firm and promised a coup if Hitler went to war. Then the british/french ceded to Hitlers demands without a fight. That broke the support for the resistance in german military circles and gave Hitler an underserved mythical aura, having stared down the old foes. After that, it took all the way until deep into the worst atrocities until german military resistance had reformed to act seriously, in 44, by then knowingly without hope of achieving anything apart from saving lives.

That is the real "alternative" chance that the world missed around Munich.
