  •  Nothing worse than a woman scorned? (10+ / 0-)

Well, in this case, a woman convicted.

I actually feel slightly sorry for him - she seems like a real piece of work.  I know that he's the author of his own downfall and that the crazy wife defense is weak... but my god, can you imagine being married to her?

      •  Check out his deeply bigoted and misogynistic (8+ / 0-)

MA Thesis for Pat Robertson's Regent University, The Republican Party's Vision for the Family: The Compelling Issue of The Decade. It is unfortunately not available online, but you can get the idea. He ended with a 15-point plan, of which he carried out several points as Governor, on abortion, school vouchers,  and other issues.

that being, of course, a total lie. That's what they teach at Regent, that Christians are just that much better than anybody else, and that Christians should lie, cheat, and steal (as Pat Robertson himself does constantly) to enforce their superiority.

I will have a Diary on that problem in the Religious Right and among Republicans more generally on Monday, in my Grokking Republicans series for the Readers and Book Lovers group. We are reading John Dean's Conservatives Without Conscience, which cites the science on people like McDonnell, from Obedience to Authority, by Stanley Milgram (previously Diaried), and The Authoritarians, by Robert Altemeyer (coming the week after).

Old Governor Ultrasound just looks like a nice guy...only skin deep. His book cover is more angelic than his wife's, but the contents are equally ugly.

    •  That's exactly what the defense wanted people (3+ / 0-)

to think--especially, I'm sure, given that the jury was seven men and five women.
A crazy, menopausal woman with an out-of-control spending habit and a mid-life-crisis crush on a charming con man.

Nothing about McDonnell's poor financial judgment (after all, he's the one who bought several million dollars of beachfront rental property that were bleeding them dry).

Or his mushy ethics--he couldn't tell the missus to return a highly questionable loan because he had to "pick his battles with her carefully"? The man who was once attorney general of Virginia was that weak?

The golf outings where expensive food and clothing "just showed up"??

Mrs McDonnell waited tables and sold health supplements from her home to put McDonnell through law school and campaigned tirelessly for him.

The defense tactic of blaming the missus is the oldest used by men who want to escape responsibility ("Lord, it was the woman who gave it me to eat...")
