  •  I disagree (none)
Democrats aren't necessarly for the war, we just realize that we need can't cut and run and we need to help build up Iraq, its the honarable thing to do. As for CAFTA we realize that it has major flaws but we are for free trade as are most Americans. As for the Patriotic Act, this is a different difficult time for us with the war on terror. We need to make sure we use evey possible resource to eliminate these terrorists and in wartime some civil liberties are lost, and it been like that throughtout US history. As for gay marriage I don't see what so wrong with civil unions that give sam sex couples all the same rights.

        These points sound SO Republican...

Democrats aren't necessarly for the war, we just realize that we need can't cut and run and we need to help build up Iraq, its the honarable thing to do.

I was talking about GETTING INTO the war in the first place. Despite plenty of evidence that Bush was lying, and despite the fact that Bush had not established himself as someone who could be trusted (if you were a Democrat -- Florida 2000 should have demolished his crediblity among Dems from the get-go), the Dems went cheerfully along with that idiotic "war resolution", ostensibly to save their hides for the 2002 midterms. Worked out great, didn't it?

Now that we're stuck there, yes, we'll have different ideas and strategies on what we should do. That's fine. We are here. But anybody who goes around and continues to claim that this war was the right thing to do has a screw loose in his head or suffers from terminal wingnuttery. And it's beyond the pale that anyone who would call herself a Democrat would continue to defend the rush to this war.

As for CAFTA we realize that it has major flaws but we are for free trade as are most Americans.

Most traditional Democratic constituencies -- unions, low-wage workers -- stand to lose big with "free trade". And they know it. "Free trade" sounds nice if you don't look at the fine print. Most Americans don't. A REAL Democratic Party would be turning that fine print into bold-faced headlines, not merrily rolling along into the abyss with the GOP.

As for the Patriotic Act, this is a different difficult time for us with the war on terror. We need to make sure we use evey possible resource to eliminate these terrorists and in wartime some civil liberties are lost, and it been like that throughtout US history.

Destroying our freedom to save it? Sheesh, how Republican can you get?

As someone else's tagline here reminds us, no legislator who voted against the Patriot Act has lost an election. Russ Feingold stayed in his seat quite nicely, thank you -- quite unlike Tom Daschle, who voted for said Patriotic (sic) Act and generally played the part of DLC stiff to perfection.

But even beyond that, the Patriot Act is an abomination of true American values. A REAL opposition party marks its territory and protects the Constitution from those who would assault it. It was a Democrat, one of the great ones, who once said, "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." He said this in the middle of a dreadful national nightmare. THAT is courage. THAT is framing. THAT is taking the fear card away from those who would exploit it. Unfortunately, If FDR were around today the DLC would be smearing him left and right  for not rolling over.

As for gay marriage I don't see what so wrong with civil unions that give sam sex couples all the same rights.

My point was that if the ONLY difference between Republicans and Democrats is gay marriage or some permutation thereof, we're going to lose every time. You have to give people a reason to vote for you EVEN if they disagree with you on gay marriage. The Democrats haven't done that in years.

A Beltway Democrat is one who attacks Howard Dean with a blowtorch and George W. Bush with a popgun.

      •  Once again I disagree (none)
We need to stop worrying about how we got into Iraq and about Florida 2000. Thats one problem the Democrats ahve had they can't let thing go. FDR did restrict civil liberties during WWII so he would probably support the Patriot Act
      •  I am a Democrat (none)
I am a Democrat you sound like you eblong to the Green Party.
        •  Zell Miller also claims to be a Democrat (none)

And if it's considered a "Green" thing to stand up for the Constitution and call out the Republicans on their misrule, our party (and our country) is in even worse shape than I thought.
