  •  A tragic case of the poison apple (none)
occurred in the leadup to the 2000 election. James Hatfield wrote Fortunate Son which broke the bush cocaine buy story. The book was yanked by St Martins press when the author James Hatfield was revealed to be a felon who'd done five years for conspiricy to commit murder.

The effect was similar to Tang. After it broke, the story was all about Hatfield and irresponsible journalism, just as TANG ceased to be about bush and the National Guard and became all about Rather and forgeries. And with similar results, two men and their true stories were discredited, and two elections won.

The story of this earlier poison apple job is told in the 2002 documentary HORNS AND HALOES.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0319514/?fr=c2l0ZT1kZnxteD0yMHxsbT01MDB8dHQ9MXxmYj11fHBuPTB8cT1ob3JucyBh bmQgaGFsb2VzfGh0bWw9MXxubT0x;fc=1;ft=20

The kicker is that Hatfield protected his source for two years and only revealed it when his book was rereleased by tiny Soft Skull press. The source for the cocaine story turned out to have been none other than Karl Rove himself! Hatfield the poor bastard never knew he'd been hit by Karl's famous ten ton truck.

When I heard Rove had been the source I was stunned, and I realized that had I seen this doc in 2002 the full significance of Rove outting his candidate to Hatfield might have sailed right by me. Now after TANG and Plame especially it was horrbly clear and I saw it for the ruthless genius ratfuck that it was. To actually be the source of the leak that could lose your candidate the presidential election when it appeared in a book about to have an 80,000 copy printing and a big ad push is breathtaking.

The second stunner was when the young owner of Softskull Press heard Hatfield had committed suicide. No it wasn't murder.  Again in light of what we know now about Karl and his methods, Hatfield's death was profoundly sad in a way I might not have apreciated in 2002 without the perpective of all the senseless deaths that have flowed from Rove's Iraq deception. Hatfield was a flawed but well meaning man who's big mistake was getting tangled in the whirling blades of Karl Rove and a presidential election.

I highly recommend HORNS AND HALOES which is rentable. Ironically the film was completed two days before 9/11.

    •  Where is Roy Cohn? (none)
Rove's cellmate in hell will be Roy Cohn.  They can ratfuck each other for all eternity.
      •  If we give Karl (none)
credit for Iraq deaths, murder of Wellstone and his family, even without possible complicity in 9/11 as Pearl Harbor, Roy Cohen would be Karl's bitch.

    •  Skeptical (none)
It's probably a mistake to attach too much credibility to Hackett's assertion that Karl Rove was his source. Same for anything Bill Burkett has said. They've been pretty thoroughly discredited. Too many people here are too willing to accept this stuff at face value just because it'd make Bush or the GOP look bad. Ask yourself if you'd believe such a shakey story if it was about a Democratic official? If not, be cautious about jumping onboard.
      •  I think it's true (none)
It still has his ingerprints all over it. Discrediting true information damaging to your candidate by leaking it to a source you can later discredit to divert attention from the truth is pure Rove. Would I believe it about a democatic official? No, because they're too goddamn dumb to pull it off.
