No matter how personally repugnant I found his actions to be, I think it showed some conjones to admit he was wrong.  Of course, a man of real honor wouldn't have tried it in the first place, but his admission shows he's got more honor than the majority of his kind.

... but not to excuse it, I might opine that he may very well come from the "old school" class of veteran who thinks that no "real" veteran who fought and served honorably and didn't have a just a cushy position could possibly be a "modern" Democrat.

I'm saying this because I have a father-in-law who used to think this way exactly ... right before he became disgusted with Bush and the Republican Party somewhere around 2003.

I suspect that the admission was a calculated decision, not any kind of moral impulse.  By conceding that he was wrong now, the issue is defused and over long before any election.  Denigrating combat veterans is a touchy don't want folks going into the election focused on thinking about how your candidate lied to defame a veteran's service, you want them focused on thinking your opponent was a lame ass excuse for a soldier.  If your current tactics aren't effectively making the jump from the first into the second, they're hurting you more than they're helping you, and the best thing is to erase them as well as you can and try a different approach.  This way they play it off as a mistake and hope people forget about it.

It doesn't mean we've seen the end of attacks on Hackett's service (I think that would be very, very unlikely).  It just means that particular attack from this particular source is over.
