    I am not suggesting that everyone can afford to work for the ACLU. I'm not an idiot. Rather, what I am suggesting is that if you don't want to work defending corporate polluters or white-collar criminals, you can try your hand at IP litigation, or insurance recovery, or securities work, or representing creditors in bankruptcies, etc. etc.

    All I am saying is that within the field of law, including high-paying, commercial law firms, there are lots of options. Sure, not every option is open to everyone. And yes, some young attorneys really won't have much of a choice at all. But if certain kinds of work or certain kinds of clients are distasteful to you, there's at least a reasonable chance that there are alternatives.

    And once Roberts was established in his field and secure financially, then he certainly had multiple options.
