  •  American Legion has sold veterans out (4.00)
My dad was a member of the American Legion in the 1950s.  For one year, he was the commander of the local American Legion post.  The major issues of that period was hiring veterans and adequately funding the VA.  The major event each year was selling crepe paper poppies on Armistice (now Veterans) Day to support services for veterans.

In the 1960s, the American Legion became more and more consumed with the conservative line about communism and was a cheerleader of Vietnam.  My dad slowly lost interest in the organization.

If he were alive, he would be appalled.  The American Legion rolled over like a puppy when Bush inadequately funded the Veterans Affairs department.  But now they have a strong statement of support for Bush's war.

The American Legion has become a front group for the Republican Party.  And the rank and file have not figured this out yet.

    •  reminds me of (none)
      Captain Beefheart's song:

      Veteran's Day Poppy

      I cry but I can't buy
      Your Veteran's Day poppy
      It don't get me high
It can only make me cry
      It can never grow another
Son like the one who warmed me my days
After rain amd warmed my breath
      My life's blood
      Screamin' empty she cries
      It don't get me high
It can only make me cry
      Your Veteran's Day poppy
