For a while now, I have been pushing for some type of Breaking News section for diaries that are timely and relevant as compared to most of the nonsense and drivel than people post...Personally, I think people should lose the ability to post diaries for a week if less than 5 people commented on their previously posted diary. Maybe make it 10 comments, or something like that. Those who post meaningful diaries would then find they could continue to post them. Those who post nonsense (and you can tell those that are nonsense by how few comments they get) would find they couldn't and would be forced to change their behavior if they wanted to be heard. It's a market-based editorial approach to weeding out the increasing amount of bullshit diaries.

    Just a thought.

I did not receive $ from Ketchum, U.S. Department of Ed or HHS to write this---though I wish I had.

From what I've seen, the number of comments a diary receives isn't always dependent on the quality or meaningfulness of the diary.  I've certainly seen many poor-quality diaries amass vast commentary just because they're about a controversial topic, or are written by a diarist with a big fan club.

It's like in traditional book publishing - the bestsellers aren't always the best-written or most important books.

Also, matters outside one's control affect the number of readers and respondents - an action-packed news day can distract readers, timing can be poor, etc.

I like the idea of greater selectivity, though.  Maybe it could be based on TU status - if your comments regularly get high mojo, your diaries get a special boost in some way.
