Wherein I'll catch the conscience of the King.

You may say "this blog is your blog" and Kos would agree with you in many respects - remember Markos' insistence during the Koufax nominations that Daily Kos wasn't a blog but a community? And Markos may say "I'm just a guy with a blog" but can he hardly believe it when his blog is the 800lb. gorilla of the internets.

Markos is clearly King of Daily Kos. A benevolent king perhaps but a king none the less. So it will always be his lot to either A) suffer the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune or B) take arms against a sea of troubles, And by opposing end them. Everybody here wants more B and less A but if we were all that smart and resolute we'd be in the majority. When Daily Kos is about taking arms against a sea of troubles it's the bee's knees. When it's about suffering slings and arrows - not so much.

I don't have a problem with you taking on Markos or the front page crew ever. You got a well deserved spoon of medicine for your "inside" comments but you are a big boy (as this diary confirms) and can surely take it. But I say keep taking your shots - even when they are off the mark.

I don't know Markos from beans but it's public knowledge that he has had an exponential rise in his public fame and much well deserved success in recent years. Most of us aren't hanging with Pearl Jam this weekend because of our blogging, for example. But for every benefit Markos reaps (security for his family, wonderful opportunities, having Dood Abides graft his head onto Jeff Gannon's body) he risks becoming what he demonstrably abhors - a political hack.

So suffering the blows of outrageous fortune every once in a while isn't such a bad thing if it helps you keep your head on straight - I mean that for all of us, not just Markos. So please keep on with the criticisms. You did an honorable thing pointing out that some of your earlier critique was based on unsubstantiated implications but you also didn't overapologize which is good. So let's all stumble forward in good spirits. Just imagine all the cat herding in these parts when we retake Congress. Heh.

remember Markos' insistence during the Koufax nominations that Daily Kos wasn't a blog but a community

If I recall, that's actually rather a vexed question. In 2003, after Wampum inaugurated the "group blog" category and awarded it to "the entire Kos community," the prize was joyfully and collectively celebrated on the front page. The next year however, dKos readers were pointedly requested by the host not to nominate the site as a "group blog." Whereupon the host, not the community, was awarded that year's "best blog" (for the first time).

Indeed, I think the symbolic tension between these two awards underscores some of your other fine points, as well as some of the recent "just a guy with a blog" debates.
