WHERE IS THE NATIONAL GUARD?? All day yesterday I didn't see one National guard vehicle. Not one. If they had been deployed BEFORE the storm hit, out of reach of the brunt of the storm, they could have immediately went in and helped. When a Cat 5 storm is on the way shouldn't there already be deployments? and who is in charge of this levee fiasco? 2 days later they can't figure out how to block the friggin levee? WTF?? Its hard to believe they haven't fixed it. Why weren't the people who showed up at the Superdome BUSSED OUT BEFORE THE STORM HIT?? I saw a pic of a hundred school buses under water. Its like they didn't want to believe how bad it was going to be. Some serious, justified finger pointing is on the way.

As I posted in the open thread after reading a similar post about the preparedness and response thus far to this disaster, I think this meme has some serious legs.

This event raises a nationwide issue of national preparedness for large scale disasters.  The whole Iraq war and habit of crying terrorist every five minutes could come around and really bite the President on the ass in light of this.

The lack of Guard presence is amazing.  The fact that more vehicles and personel and the army and navy were not on immediate stand-by, that only finally today they are moving into the region should be seen as an incredible indication of incompetence by the administration.

They expected the Hurricane to hit further west.  If it had the damage would have been worse.  Complete flooding of the city was expected.  Thats why they evaculated.  But the fact that they are not prepared, that they have no idea how to move 10 - 15 thousand people immediately out of the city is just embarrassing.  That the President only now is putting down the guitar..and going to DC? WTF? and not making nightly television appearances to call on the nation to donate aid (money)?

What if this was a terrorist attack in a city, where is the guard?  Why is the response time in this case so damn slow.  Why is that levy still leaking?  They knew this could happen in advance?    They have talked about this possibility for years. Where is the national level preparedness?  Why is the President not more involved even into day 3?

I think, I hope, this is going to get a lot of eyebrows raised among the people. We gotta push on the media to raise this question of national preparedness...Ted Koppel did a great job doing just that last night at the end of nightline as his signing off point!

The meme: The President has left the home land unguarded and unprepared!
      The question: How come?

        CNN reports:

The U.S. Navy was dispatching ships to the area, including the USNS Comfort, a floating hospital based in Baltimore, and an amphibious ready group led by the amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima.

WTF is that boat still doing in Baltimore?  Its was a god damn Class 5 Hurricane that was expected to bullseye New Orleans.  Why the hell was that boat not already stationed in Florida  by Sunday?

The people in the bullseye were not considered worth it.

I'm sure the sailors on the boat, and their immediate commanders, would not agree, but then they don't set their own schedule.

You will see more of this. BushCo tolerates global warming not because they're too dumb to see it coming, but because most of the victims in the US and abroad will be "not their sort of people."

You think they don't understand the science and the consequences? I think they want them.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

      •  another thing - the Superdome plan (none)
ok - so they are going to move people to the Superdome...then what?  People can not live in a dome for weeks.  That is a rediculous idea.  Is there a plan in here somewhere for a refugee camp, because thats what seems to be need (disclaimer: INADissasterRecoveryExpert)?  But this just seems like they have not thought about what you do when you evac a city at all.  And this goes right to the terrorism thing.

If they knew what they were going to do they would say...we plan to set up a refugee camp in xxx place and that gives us access to xxx roads and resources, and that takes xxx days to establish, and until then we can house xxx people at the superdome or wherever for this time period, and people should only bring xxx belongings...etc.

But obviously there is no plan!

Hello home land security, this is your morning wake up call...GET THE FUCK UP!

    •  Have they shown up today? (none)
I wonder how they are going to call up the local National Guard when there is no phone service or electricity in the area.

How many of the Louisiana National Guard lived in New Orleans?

I am dumb founded as well why they hadn't made an appearance in the rescue effort as of yesterday.  I saw tons of unedited video tape from NO and they were no where to be found.  The National Guard in Iraq must be going nuts knowing their families at home are not being rescued and protected.

Well at least they are starting to plug the holes in the levees.  Believe it or not they are waiting for slings for the sandbags to arrive.
