    ...the storm surge from the northerly winds over Lake Pontchatrain was a set up for disaster. Supposedly the flood walls were 20 feet above the lake level, that's one heck of a storm surge.

    Unfortunately, once it was known we were dealing with at least a cat 4, it was a lose-lose situation.  If it had gone west of NO, certainly the wind damage would have been worse, and instead of Pontchatrain levees giving, you would have had Mississippi levees going, plus whatever gulf water storm surge it brought.  It went east, and we still had levee failure.  And given the gigantic size of the storm, it would have been disaster no matter what.

    And not to discount the incompetence, but once a levee's breached, it's breached.  No amount of sandbagging would have saved it.  The focus should be on why weren't the levees built higher?

    People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.
