    However, it was politically stupid for him to say it!  So, we should count our blessings!

    In Britain they admit to having royalty. In the United States we pretend we don't have any, and then we elect them president.

      A number of towns were wiped out in the Mississippi River flood of 1993.  I know of at least one - Valmeyer, Illinois - that was rebuilt on higher ground.

      OK, the situations aren't exactly analogous.  There isn't much high ground in that part of Louisiana, and we can't forget about three centuries of history and human investment in New Orleans.

      I should be the last person to cut Hastert some slack, but it's called for here.  New Orleans will always be at risk of flooding from major storms.  Perhaps if Hastert spoke of upgrading levees, floodwalls, pumps, drainage systems, etc., instead of abandoning it to the elements, we could all find common ground.
