    My Father grew up in one of the houses described by F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Great Gatsby, not because his father was rich, but because he was an officer (drafted back at age 45 no less)  at the US Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point Long Island.

    The Academy was created during WWII to address a critical shortage of trained sailors to crew the Liberty ships delivering supplies to Russia and Britain through the teeth of the German U-boat fleet.  When it came time to site the academy some of the richest men in America (including Ford and Rockefeller) stepped forward and donated their waterfront estates In NY to the effort.  Wonder if we'll see any similar patriotism from the mega-rich this time?
