...if the opposition party could point to some positive things it proposed rather than simply the failings of the Republicans? In this case, wouldn't it be better if they mounted a vigorous defense of the estate tax? They ought to have the votes to filibuster. ABGOP is pretty thin gruel...and no matter how bad things get, it will be a hard platform to sell to the American people.

Note, for example, that Reid's statement above is all about process, i.e. "why bring up this tax repeal now?," rather than substance, i.e. "repealing the estate tax is a terrible idea."  Why? Because the Democrats have failed to defend this most fair of all taxes in the past, and my money is on their failing to defend it next week.

Democrats ought to have enough votes for a filibuster. Instead, my guess is that around forty Dems will vote against it next week, and then hope to be able to make hay with it next year. Problem is voters don't care about process issues, and seem perfectly willing to accept tax cuts targetted at the extremely wealthy because the Democrats have continually failed to mount a defense of taxation. Given the perfect opportunity to mount such a defense (i.e. we have huge budget shortfalls, we failed to pay for levee reconstruction, we now have massive disaster relief needs, and the estate tax encourages charitable giving), they've failed again.

"Not this week, Sen. Frist"?!?! That's the best Reid can do?!?! Give me a break!
