  •  What is the black babies reference from? (none)
Did he actually say something to that effect, or is it just an observation? Population thinning is scary..

Leaving them for days to thin out the elderly and those close to death probably saved millions in extended health care for those people. I say it's unlikely, but reasonable to think that it was a possibility.

    I wish I wasn't able to say that. :-(

    •  A new form of "voter suppression"? (none)
Easy to imagine the political calculus taking place, isn't it?  "That's 10,000 fewer Democratic votes we'll have to worry about."
      •  I think it goes deeper than that. (4.00)
I think that this deplorable inaction that we've witnessed this week goes even farther than "a new brand of voter suppression". I think that, ultimately, the point is for them to attempt to say, <rethugspeak>"See what happens when you have bigger government? We need to get rid of these foolish socialist programs and let the free market handle this type of disaster in the future."</rethugspeak>

It all goes back to Grover Norquist's whole, "Government small enough to drown in the bathtub" idea. I wont be at all surprised if someone on the other side of the aisle in congress proposes legislation (after the immediate disaster is under better control) to severely gut FEMA and allow privatization of our national security. Hey, it's worked in spades in Iraq.</extreme sarcasm>

What I think it comes down to though and, unfortunately for the administration no amount of spin will change it, we aren't any safer than we were on 9/11/01. After spending hundreds of billions of dollars to "make us safer", Katrina blew the lipstick off of that pig right quickly. I don't rightly know if the incidents noted in this diary were intentional, incompetence, or both. I would venture to guess that it's a little of both. It is my personal belief that it's time for EVERY Democrat inside the beltway to stand on top of their desks and tell these incompetent thugs that we aren't going to get shit done for them until we deal with the suffering and dying in New Orleans. You want to start hearings on John Roberts? Fuck you! Americans are dying in the streets in one of our own cities. You want to vote on permanently eliminating the Estate tax? Fuck you! There are thousands of Americans trapped in a hell not of their making and until we have gotten them everything they need, we aren't doing shit. All of the Republicans that I've seen talking about this issue have, to a person, said the same thing over the last few days: "This is not the time for finger pointing." I would submit to them that, in their world, that time never comes. Our Democratic representatives need to realize that NOW IS THE TIME! How many more people have to die as a result of the incompetence and gross negligence of the Bush Administration before we are duty-bound as the Opposition party (This means you're supposed to oppose guys!) to begin taking this criminal administration to task for their continued bungling (whether intentional or otherwise) of everything they touch? I am beyond outraged and, as another poster noted above, if heads don't roll as a result of this travesty, I will have lost ALL faith in my fellow Americans and may consider getting the fuck out of Dodge. To the Dems on the hill: Now is the time! You must make the American people understand that this is the result of the GOPs methods of governance; nothing good comes of their brand of compassion or conservatism. Now is the time to take these murderers and thugs to task for their criminal negligence over the last 4+ years.

Okay Mr President, I'm sick of my friends coming home in flag draped boxes now! Get us out of your mess!

        •  Exactly... (none)
this is what they are driving towards, and that is the real prism to view what they actually do, and not the PR spin in order to distract, obfuscate and dissemble until they can have their pieces in place to present a fate accompli.

Nobody will change America for you, you have to work to make it happen
