    The plain meaning of the word is "someone taking refuge".  It didn't occur to me to think otherwise until the objections started bubbling to the surface.

    Jesse Jackson saying "racist" gives these rednecks in my office a target regardless of whether his complaint has merit.  If I didn't know better, I'd think he was a Karl Rove plant --"Look!  Shiny!"  My coworkers were angry and frustrated and empathetic, then along comes this near-trivial language quibble that brings them straight back around to "no matter what we do, those people will always call us racists."
