And so have others. The president of Jefferson Parish, to whom those sheriffs report, is Aaron Broussard, the man who broke down crying on the news about the friend of his mother that 'drowned on Friday'. The mandatory evacuation order by the mayor was in effect, and these sheriffs were interfering with this order.

There must be criminal charges brought against this parish, and damages equal to or greater than the property they sought to protect must be extracted, so that this is never tried again.

When apologists try to claim that class, not race, was the issue in the hurricane, they obscure the fact that FEAR of black skin is racism, and in fact is the root of HATRED of black skin. And it was FEAR of black skin that was at the root of this. That is inarguable.

    •  Missed the point. (none)
I've also been pushing the story for days, but your post seems to imply that what Gretna did was only wrong becuase it was race based.  I don't think we need to go there.  I don't care if they kept people in desperate need out because they were black, because they were poor, because they were dirty, or just because.  Their actions were inexcusable, period.  If they were stupid enough to admit that they would have let people through if they were white then maybe I would be even more angry, but that's hard to imagine.

I'm not denying that it was probably race based.  I just don't think anybody has to prove that extra fact to fire every deputy involved, jail every deputy involved, and bankrupt the parish with civil rights suits.

I felt all kinds of sympathy for Aaron Broussard and his parish when he spoke about the nursing home.  If these are the same people and we have a situation where town leaders are crying about not getting any help at the same time they were slamming the door on other people then I don't know how I feel.  Anybody want to talk about karma?

      •  Yes, I agree that it's an outrage regardless (none)
of whether it was based on race. The thing so annoying to me is that the media, it seems everyone, is overlooking the obvious; that FEAR of black people is as much racism as HATRED of black people. This was a decision resulting from fear. So was a lot of the delay in response. Fears about security, looting, crowds getting out of control, and all that. But that fear would not have been there, in the same extent, had that crowd been white, and that is plain to everyone.
