your diary, and so many others like it, are all about the politics.  "How do we exploit this situation without offending all the white people?"  It's angle-playing, it's timid, and most of all, it flies in the face of reality.

I call bullshit on that.  It is no accident that the vast majority of those trapped inside New Orleans (literally at gunpoint, in some cases) were BLACK.  Do you really think Jim Crow is that far gone in the Deep South?  I don't, and the FACTS of this situation do everything but scream at you.

Don't look away, don't play games, don't manipulate.  Call it for what it is.  Yes, of course, there are poor white people -- but where were they by the end of the week?  They were evacuated, they were relocated, they were GONE.  What remained?  Blacks.  That's it.  You can spin it anyway you like, but that's what they were, and that's what they always are at the end of the day.

White people don't get left to their own devices, white people don't have guns pointed at them, and white people aren't assumed to be rapers, looters and criminals by the powers that be in the rural South.  Until we all get that through our collective skulls, ain't nothin' gonna change.

whites, even poor whites, aren't considered "criminal" in the way that blacks are.  This is the very definition of racism...and we know it exists.

A couple of days ago I dared suggest that racism was a real problem in southern white communities and there were people who were ready to take my head off...its a very sore subject.

Ofcourse the south isn't the only area where racism exists.  Ofcourse, all southern whites are not racist...but to deny, only a generation after Jim Crow, that racism is still rampant in the south is nonsense.

I do believe that we can make the case that BushCo would let any of us sit and rot if the situation called for it.  To them, we're all just one great big underclass that deserves little if any consideration.
