One problem with ID is that in order to sell it Christians have to soft-pedal it, making it fuzzy and generic. There's no reference to the central Christian belief that this world is far from perfect, it's broken and cursed by sin, and will remain increasingly so until it's restored. (Of course this is on par with conservatives' utter disregard of environmentalism.) Talking about that would of course bring in specifically religious issues that the separation of church and state wisely forbids to be addressed by state entities. So we've got Christians selling out and promoting half-baked versions of their beliefs, and that hurts both Christianity and science.
