  •  What I would like to see... (4.00) someone take a stab at calculating the REAL cost of a gallon of gasoline.  Do a few scenarios, such as: The Iraq war can/cannot be counted as a direct cost, etc.  Then calculate what the corresponding energy from solar, etc. would cost.  Then let's see how "expensive" some of these alternatives are in REAL terms.  People talk about this sort of thing, but it would stick with people a lot better if there were a publicized number, like, "the real cost of gas is $6.50 a gallon," or whatever the number turns out to be.

If someone HAS done that, I'd appreciate a pointer to it.

Good, thoughtful work on the diary.  Wish I could be so thorough in my postings!

    •  How about the real cost of the roads? (none)
It's at least as much as the Iraq war - vastly more expensive than railways between cities, like most countries tend to use.
    •  Great point (none)
The hardest part of switching from gasoline is the huge institutional investment and subsidy we have already put into it.  If we subsidised research and infrastructure of alternative sources as much as we pour into gas, we would be in much better shape. the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance, and despises all dissent
