a 50 mile range works locally, but then what to do when you need to go on a 200 mile one way trip?
We're not going to "run out" of liquid fuels anytime soon (ever, really) - it's just going to get more and more expensive to balance supply and demand. So how often do you need to take a 200 miles trip? Not often? Then you'll just suck it up and pay for it with liquid fuel in your (rented?) hybrid. Very often? If it's for economic reasons, then you'll suck it up as long as it continues to be economical. If it's for pleasure, then you'll either decide it's still worth it or not. Or rearrange your life - especially where you live and/or work - to make it less necessary.

I think this rearrangement of the exurban American lifestyle along metropolitan European lines will happen surprisingly quickly, and not too painfully, when the price of gas really starts spiking. People today commute 60 miles to save money on housing. People tomorrow will live near work - moving more often, if necessary - to save money on energy.
