  •  Solar project (4.00)
Since Katrina, I've been thinking of cheap ways of making solar distillers.  Solar distillers basically use the power of the sun to basically distill water from a variety of sources.  It cleans up the water pretty good; unfortunately, organic compounds may linger on in the distilled water.  Thought I had a breakthrough idea this weekend combining a typical 5-gallon Home Depot bucket with a 5-gallon Arrowhead bottle with drilled-in spigots and trackers to direct the water flow, but that idea needs more tinkering.

On the other hand, I've also been highly interested in coal-to-gas liquefaction technology.  Ironically, this technology was developed by the Nazis during WW2 and later, by South Africa (when it was still apartheid).  But the Fischer-Tropsch process sounds fascinating (given that it CAN produce clean fuels) and we got TONS of coal in our backyard, especially in Montana and Wyoming.  Hopefully if the red dolts who voted for Bush feel enough pain with $3 gas, they'll have a change of heart and demand this, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed.

Lastly, there are a lot of great sites on how to make biodiesel on the web.  Fascinating stuff.

    •  Fischer-Tropsch will be used (none)
After the peak, Fischer-Tropsch will proably be used a lot. (That is, while coal is still available.) But don't expect it to produce oil in the quantity that we're used t, or to be clean.

While it's technically possible to filter out toxins, and even sequester carbon, the energy shortages and high prices will probably lead to a loosening of environmental rules (especially with the Republicans in charge, as we've already seen in New Orleans).
