    Thin film solar fabrication is coming online in Silicon Valley, with at least two companies (Nanosolar and Miasole) getting substantial amounts of venture capital.  Fabricating this technology consumes considerably less raw materials and electricity than conventional solar panels; it looks more like printing on flexible plastic than conventional silicon processing.

    They're not as efficient as the best conventional cells - about 11% vs 33% - but the process is so simple that energetic payback is counted in months or weeks as opposed to years, and the companies estimate cost per watt might be as little as a tenth of existing technologies.
