  •  Buy Gerber Knives and Tools instead of Leatherman (none)
This is a very excellent diary, but might I suggest instead of a Leatherman Tool, that you should get a Gerber tool instead; they are much better made than a Leatherman and will hold an edge much longer.

They are surgically sharp and have multiple configurations to suite individual needs.

When you go to purchase your multitool, ask the person behind the counter to show you both the Leatherman and the Gerber.
Don't let the price difference sway you, hold them both in separate hands and feel the blades of both products, you will clearly see the difference.

Gerber even has a quick open feature and locks securely into place.
Gerber makes some of the best knives in the world, and you will certainly get your moneys worth from their product.
Getting caught in an emergency with a dull, poorly made knife is much more dangerous than not having one at all.

The saw blade on these puppies will amputate a limb if need be, or so I am told.

Gerber Multi Tool owner X 2

    •  Ah, the eternal argument (none)

I've owned both. I, frankly, am a lot happier with my Leatherman Charge Ti. But it is just plain incorrect to say that the Gerber tool is 'much better made' than the Leatherman. For the same money (the high-end Leatherman vs. the regular Gerber tool) they are very similar in quality, and it eventually all comes down to preference.
